As a consequence of the March 11 earthquake and the events that followed, 11,532 have been confirmed dead, while 16,441 are missing.

The opposition Liberal Democratic Party is considering joining a coalition government in response to the earthquake.

The bodies 1,000 victims of the earthquake cannot be reached in Fukushima because of radiation fears.


Damage to fthe Japanese economy from the earthquake could be very severe.

The government has appointed former IMF economist Sayuri Shirai to the Bank of Japan board.

The Nikkei 225 index gained 0.5 percent on Thursday.


The yen traded Thursday at ¥83.1 to the dollar.
