Three surveys by major media organizations have found the majority of the public would support a consumption tax hike to fund reconstruction in the north of the country.

According to Kyodo News, surveys by the Asahi Shimbun, Nihon Keizai Shimbun and Mainichi Shimbun all found a majority of respondents supported a tax hike.

The Asahi found 59 percent in favor of a hike, the Mainichi 58 percent, while the Nikkei said 69 percent of those questioned supported a rise.

Last month, the powerful Japan business federation, Keidanren, said it would accept the shelving of a planned corporate tax cut until the nation is on a more stable path.
