Japan’s second biggest mobile operator, KDDI Corp., may team up with the U.S. giant Apple to sell the iPhone 5 gadget on the Asian market, according to reports by a Nikkei publication.
The news has triggered a wave of comments on Twitter, the most popular international social platform in Japan. The “Au iPhone” item, referring to the possible launch of the future version of the iPhone on KDDI’s Au network, was the top trending discussion.
“iPhone from au? I might think about it when (my current contract with Softbank) expires in February,” an iPhone fan twitted.
The move would be bad news for Softbank Corp., KDDI’s rival mobile operator. Softbank is currently the only iPhone provider in Japan.
According to Nikkei’s report, KDDI will sell the iPhone 5, which is expected to launch next month, at its au shops around the country starting around November.
