Representing Japan

3 years ago by in Japan Archives

On average, each of Japan's 722 Diet members represents just over 175,000 citizens. Those who complain the country's parliament is overstaffed and sclerotic, however, can be thankful they don't live in Britain, which has added 117 seats to its lower house during the past year and where parliamentarians represent on average fewer than 44,000 citizens. At the other end of the spectrum is India, whose 797 members of parliament represent on average more than 1.5 million people.
