McDonald’s Japan received a number of 130 complaints regarding the glass tumblers it handed out for free as part of the “Olympic Cheer Coke Glass Campaign” and said that it is recalling the glasses.
The company gave away six million tumblers in Japan. 78 people reported being injured by the glasses.
McDonald’s admitted some of the glasses had “glass protrusions” on their edges or insides and said the cause was a manufacturing error. Specifically, the irregularities were caused by flawed metallic moulds used by the producer of the glass, it said.
“We received 130 complaints from our customers by August 7, of which 78 customers said they suffered cuts, although injuries were not serious enough to warrant their going to hospital,” said a company representative.
McDonald’s is accepting the glasses back and it will replace them between now and the end of October.
