Japan to join Copa America tournament Chile in 2015

Asian champions Japan will take part in the Copa America tournament in Chile in 2015, the officials involved in organizing the event said.

“It’s a very satisfying announcement for our continent’s football and more proof of the excellent relations we have had with the Japanese FA for a long time”, said CONMEBOL president Eugenio Figueredo in an interview published on the South American governing body’s website (www.conmebol.com).

This will be the second time Japan takes part in such a tournament. The first time the team participated at Copa America was in 1999, the international media write. Mexico, Costa Rica, United States and Honduras were also guests during the years.

Uruguayan Figueredo confirmed Japan’s participation after a visit to the Asian country this week when Copa America holders Uruguay beat Japan 4-2 in a friendly in Sendai.

The 2015 Campeonato Sudamericano Copa América, simply known as the 2015 Copa América, will be the 44th edition of the Copa América, the main international football tournament for national teams in South America. The competition will be organized by CONMEBOL, South America’s football governing body. The tournament will be held in Chile in July 2015. Uruguay is the defending champion. The winner of the tournament will earn the right to compete for the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup hosted by Russia.
