South Korea’s National Intelligence Service (NIS) said on Monday that North Korea uses Russian electromagnetic pulse (EMP) weaponry in order to paralyze the military electronic equipment of its southern neighbor.
South Korea’s spy agency mentioned that North Korea reason for buying the Russian weapons is to develop its own technology.
EMP weapons are used to damage electronic equipment. At higher energy levels, an EMP event can cause more widespread damage including to aircraft structures and other objects, the international press reports.
According to the spy agency, North Korea intends to use cyberattacks together with nuclear weapons and missiles and has collected information on where South Korea stores chemical substances and oil reserves as well as details about subways, tunnels and train networks in major cities.
North Korean spies are also distributing pro- Pyongyang propaganda in Japan and China, NIS added.
Aside from cyberattacking military institutions, North Korea has targeted as well commercial banks, government agencies, TV broadcasters and media websites, a South Korean lawmaker, citing government information, said in October.
North Korea has denied any involvement in cyber attacks and accused Seoul of fabricating them to fan cross-border tension.
