Japanese tech maker Panasonic announced it will try again to conquer the European mobile phone market after an absence of nearly six years.
The company intends to launch its first “global” smartphone next March, in Europe. The product will then be brought to the U.S., China, and other Asian destinations.
"We are well aware of our powerful competitors," said Toshinori Hoshi, manager of Panasonic’s mobile communications unit. "However, market shares are changing dramatically and if we launch into this fast-changing market, we believe we have a chance of a hit."
According to analysts, the device may run Google’s Android platform and other services, like the Google Wallet application for mobile payments.
Panasonic only announced that the new device will feature a 4.3-inch OLED screen and that it would be dustproof and waterproof.
It intends to sell 15 million units worldwide by 2016. For the next financial year, it aims to sell 1.5 million units in Europe.
