A Japanese man who was robbed in the city of Kitakyushu has decided to walk more than 800 miles to get back home in Sendai after he was left with no wallet and mobile phone.

Instead of reporting the robbery to the police and let his family know about the inconvenience, the man started walking on August 25, after being mugged, only to arrive home 11 days later in Sendai, in the northeast of Japan.

The 25-year-old man was initially supposed to get back home by plane, with his mom reporting her son’s missing after he failed to catch the return flight.

“I was shocked and thought I was seeing a ghost when he arrived,” she said. “I am just thrilled that he is back and I am very sorry to everyone who was worried about him.”

She added that he had got a good tan during his journey.

The man was attending a major playing card convention but was stopped on a street around 10pm by a group of five men who demanded that he hand over his wallet and mobile phone.

Lucky for him, the man had kept an extra Y2,000 (£12.82) inside his shoe.

“I used the money I had hidden in my shoe to buy bread and water to fight off the hunger,” he said.

“It was good to be able to get home, but I did not want to cause any problems for anyone,” he said. “I am sorry to everyone that I inconvenienced.”
