A demonstration in Tokyo against nuclear power took place on Sunday, attracting thousands of people opposing Japan’s energy policies.

The atmosphere was friendly, but police seemed overstretched by the number attending the demonstration.

The march was split into three or more groups to allow traffic to still pass through Koenji, and chants of “genpatsu yamero” (quit nuclear) and “genpatsu hantai” (we’re opposed to nuclear) competed with drums and brass instruments for attention.

Despite a declaration by organizers that the demonstration was to call for the immediate abolition of nuclear power, many participating stated their intention was to see Tepco called to account and energy policy rethought in the aftermath of the disaster at the Fukushima Daiichi plant.
