Media reports from China say that after 3 days of recruiting members for “SNH48”, the Shanghai version of the popular Japanese idol group “AKB48” the number of applicants surpassed more than 30K hopefuls.
Despite the growing anti-Japanese mood in China related to disputes about the Senkaku Islands, there is still a strong interest in Japanese idols and idol groups.
This will be the first large idol group in China. Applications were accepted from July and those who pass the initial application screening will be invited to audition at regional events held throughout China.
In addition to China, the owners of the AKB48 brand are planning to setup operations in Indonesia with “JKT48” or Jarkata48, with plans for other international branches.
