Yuko Oshima, 23, won the title of the most popular member of AKB48 pop music group after the general election competition which had the finals on Wednesday.
She received over 108,000 votes and was crowned as the top member of the group at the final event held at Nippon Budokan, in front of a live audience of 12,000 people.
Watanabe Mayu came second, with 72,000 votes, while Kashiwagi Yuki occupied the third position, with 71,000 votes.
“I don’t have any outstanding talent, however, I came to do everything with all my strength and with a smile and with everyone’s support of watering me and shining for me, this flower was able to bloom,” Oshima said. ”However, flowers do wither at some point, so I plead you to be my sun-like existence from here on.”
Over a million votes are collected every year at the traditional elections, which is the largest event in Japanese music and entertainment.
AKB48 was created in 2005 by TV and music producer Yasushi Akimoto.
The group comprises about 90 performers, aged from their early teens to mid-20s. It is one of the greatest successes in Japan’s music industry history, with more than $200 million in CD and DVD sales only last year.
