A number of 22 restaurants from the Tokyo area made their first entry in the exclusive starred club of Michelin awards, confirming once again that Japan is the culinary capital of the world.

The restaurants that made it into the sixth edition of the Michelin Tokyo guide are located in Tokyo, Shonan or Yokohama. Six new restaurants were awarded two stars, while 16 restaurants got their first star.

This year’s selection of restaurants in Japan represents a wide variety of cooking styles and cuisines, says Michelin, including sushi, soba, tempura, yakitori, steakhouse, Chinese, and French contemporary.

Fifteen restaurants in the region maintained their three stars. A total number of 286 restaurants in the Tokyo area have Michelin stars.

Tokyo is the best represented city in the list. By comparison, French capital, Paris, has just 10 restaurants that have been awarded all three stars, and 77 starred restaurants overall.
