wrestlingThe Japan Wrestling Federation launched a petition on Monday, asking for wrestling to be included back in the Olympic sports.

Earlier this month, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) eliminated wrestling from the list of 25 confirmed sports for the 2020 Olympics.

“Once you have collected many voices, they will have the power to move the world,” the federation said in a website statement announcing the “Save Olympic Wrestling” petition. “Now is the time to mobilize the power of those who support wrestling.”

The federation is trying to gather 100,000 signatures both on paper and online and give them to the IOC executive board in May, the international press reports.

Japan came second in the London 2012 wrestling medals table with four gold medals, with Russia being placed on the first position.

Wrestling’s cause has brought together enemies that would probably not cooperate in different circumstances, with American and Iranian national Olympic officials among those to call for the sport’s reinstatement.

The final decision on the Olympic program for the 2020 Games will be made by the IOC in Buenos Aires in September. The host city of the event will also be announced at that time.

Wrestling has been an Olympic sport in various forms since 1904.
