Japan to introduce microcompact cars as new official category

The Japanese government intends to add a new vehicle type to its list of stipulated categories, for the first time since 1963. The new type of car is the so-called microcompact, having one or two seats, smaller than light vehicles.

The authorities think the microcompact could become particularly interesting for the elderly clients, as they are easier to drive and park. Moreover, a number of bus lines have been cancelled lately, especially in rural areas, due to decreased number of clients, so the small cars could come in handy.

The new category would be inserted in the Road Transport Vehicle Law under the light vehicles and above the category-1 motorized cycles, motorcycles with engines of maximum 50cc.

According to sources close to the matter, the government is working to decide tax values for the new category and will then make efforts to encourage car makers produce more microcompacts.
