Japanese figure skaters selected for the Sochi Olympics

Figure skaters Akiko Suzuki, Mao Asada and Kanako Murakami have been selected for the women’s team at the Sochi Winter Olympics in 2014. From the men’s team, Yuzuru Hanyu, Tatsuki Machida and Daisuke Takahashi have been chosen, according to the Japan Skating Federation.

Suzuki, 28, won the women’s title at the All-Japan Figure Skating Championships on Monday, while Asada, 23, who won the Grand Prix Final and finished third in the All-Japan championships was selected to participate at the Winter Games.

Murakami, 19, will participate for the first time at the Winter Olympic Games, according to the local press.

In the men’s team, Hanyu, 19, and Machida, 23, will also compete in the Olympics for the first time. Takahashi, 27, will skate at the Olympics for the third time in a row.

Ice dancers Cathy Reed, 26, and Chris Reed, 24, and pair Narumi Takahashi, 21, and Ryuichi Kihara, 21, were also selected.

The 2014 Winter Olympics are scheduled to take place 6 to 23 February 2014, in Sochi, Russia, with some events held in the resort town of Krasnaya Polyana. 98 events in 15 winter sports will be held.
